If you are planning on having any kind of cosmetic procedures done in the near future, you should have a thorough examination and get any cavities filled.
In most cases you won't need to worry about this because our dentist will check you out for any issues that may need addressing prior to the procedure, but if you have questions or concerns you can ask during the initial consultation.
Why Do I Have to Get Cavities Filled?
A cavity happens when the tooth is depleted of some of the minerals that it needs to be healthy. This can be caused by many reasons including poor oral hygiene or failure to visit the dentist regularly. Brushing and flossing can also prevent cavities. Having your cavities filled is important to protect the teeth from further decay.
Some cosmetic procedures, such as veneers, require us to cover the teeth with a film using bonding. If a cavity is present in the area, additional decay may go unnoticed to the naked eye. Depending on your oral health, our dentist will recommend you avoid certain cosmetic procedures.
For example, if you have gum disease or periodontal disease, you won't be a good candidate for veneers. In general, cosmetic procedures to improve your smile are recommended for patients with good oral health. If the tooth has lost a lot of its bone structure the best option could be a crown.
In general, filling your cavities is one of the first things our dentist will do before referring you for a cosmetic procedure. Protecting the tooth from additional damage is more important than the way it looks, which we can take with additional treatment. If you have a cavity, don't wait and make an appointment with us today to have them taken care of.
